Retiring The Shuttle Discovery Is A Historic But Sad Day For The Space Program

New Seniors well remember when the Russians launched the first satellite, Sputnik, back in the mid-'50s. It signaled the beginning of the space age. We made some progress with manned space flights but we lagged behind the Soviets and were losing the race. It was President Kennedy's promise that the United States would land a man on the moon in the next decade that inspired us to this great achievement.

The Discovery was an important part of America's supremacy in space. But now, after flying 39 missions since 1984 and racking up nearly 149 million miles while spending a record total of a combined 365 days in space, this workhorse of NASA's fleet is home safe and sound and for good. With the launch of the shuttle Endeavour followed by Atlantis this phase of our space program will end.

There has been much success with the program, but the tragedies will be remembered as well. Americans were shaken by the explosion that occurred seconds after launch of the Challenger shuttle in 1986. In 2003, we were again reminded that space travel is a risky business when Columbia burned up while entering the earth's atmosphere.

Some of the most notable products and technical advances attributed to the space program are: scratch-resistant glasses, freeze-dried foods, athletic shoes, CAT scanners and MRIs, cool suits and cordless power tools to name a few. In addition, the Hubble telescope and the space station have the shuttle program to thank for their successes. Future efforts in space will likely produce similar technical and practical results.

Flight has come a long way since Orville and Wilbur Wright successfully faced the challenge of propelling a heavier-than-air machine through the air in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina back in December of 1903. The initial flight was over a distance of 120 feet and lasted just 12 seconds. The fourth and final flight of that historic day covered 852 feet and lasted 59 seconds.

The first flight showed that man could in fact fly and lit the fuse of imagination that continues to burn bright after more than a century. In WWI, the bi-planes played an important role. Following that airplanes had more utilitarian function. But it was WWII that set the stage for worldwide travel and shipping. Later, the jet revolutionized the importance of air travel by making it faster, easier and more comfortable.

Will the shuttle program act as the precursor to inter-planetary space travel? Will the inhabitants of earth take this for granted in the same way we accept jumping on a jetliner to go across the country in just a few hours as a perfectly natural thing to do? Or, will man's ingenuity result in a breakthrough that takes us to the stars faster and safer than we could believe? Whatever happens, the world will continue to benefit from America's successful space shuttle program.

Discovery of Atlantis?

Well, definitely found Atlantis! This is according to Robert Sarmast. But who is Mr. Robert Sarmast? Mr. Sarmast was an architect who has been fascinated with finding lost civilizations and ancient history. For years he traveled, gathering data in their research of these ancient cultures. He was extremely interested in Atlantis. Published a book on the subject in 2003 entitled "Discovery of Atlantis" and concluded that the islandCyprus, where Atlantis existed.

There are many theories about Atlantis, where they existed. Recently the South Pole or Antarctica has suggested. In the past many different places were chosen, if we list them, covering different areas of the Earth. A few years ago, the remains were found on the coasts of Japan and many suggest that this is the location of Atlantis. The same applies to the Bahamas. The famous Bimini Roadsays it is a relic of Atlantis. Another area that is said to be where it was Atlantis is South America. After all, there are many mysterious cities that have been abandoned there which are designed in such a way as to challenge the construction methods. In some places, the stones are so close that even a sheet of paper can not fit between them, however, no mortar was used. In another of these cities, huge stone were taken to the mountaintops to be used in the cityConstruction, a company can not even equal to the present. There are other places where there is suspected that Atlantis and some of them are in the middle of the ocean. Some say that Atlantis sank, so you can not find your position. Oh, there are many different stories as Atlantis.

So why people think they know it was Atlantis. or in fact, still exist? Homer, the famous Greek story teller and writer, livedaround the first century BC C. 8. Originally it was believed by modern people that Homer was a great writer of science fiction, but then things started happening, perhaps suggesting that his works were not fiction after all. The city of Troy was unearthed. Homer wrote the Iliad, the story of the battle between the Greeks and the city of Troy lasted ten years. Suddenly, a job that all the drama, however, may have been based on facts. People began to look at the Odyssey, another of Homerfamous works. If it were true that the Iliad may be true even Odyssey? This is important because many think that the Phoenician island of Atlantis was Scheria and Homer mentions the island in his work. Plato was a Greek old as we know it. This ancient philosopher who lived around 400 BC.

There are two books written by Plato, which passes through the reference to Atlantis. These books are Timeaus and Criteas. Suggest that Atlantis wasin the Atlantic Ocean and was the home of an advanced race that went to war against Athens and lost. It said that Atlantis was in front of the Pillars of Hercules. Is still said to them, of Atlanta, was defeated in many European countries, but the Athenians were able to drive again outside Europe. The story continues that the company records were lost due to a flood that devastated part of Athens and all of Atlantis. Criteas In Plato gives muchdetailed account of Atlantis.

Now we know why people believe that Atlantis existed. so let's go back to Mr. Sarmast. Why Cyprus and elsewhere are not? "It s definitely Atlantis," said Sarmast said, referring to Cyprus. Sarmast said the tracks were present in the descriptions of Plato. Said it has received data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that fits. He continued that the data were collected in 1987, when scientific researchMediterranean was taken. After returning from the statement, said he had used sonar to find natural formations found in the center of the city of Atlantis.

A remote display has been called by Psychognosia, an organization which had contested the claim. * The remote display in the past used his talent, while in the U.S. Army. When asked to tell what he saw now and 10,000 years ago, he said, going back in time to see apredominant city with buildings, but was now only ruins were buried.

Cyprus could be Atlantis? Why not, I think is a good case, as elsewhere. Perhaps Mr. Sarmast successful at something. I think only time will tell.

* During the Cold War, the U.S. government conducted experiments with people to "see" targets around the world were in the room The experiments were said to meet with some success. These same people, they saidable to look back. The Soviet Union also used the same type of people were called remote viewers.

Addendum:

Since I finished writing this story of Mr. Sarmast provides new evidence. He says he has found Atlantis and made sure it has a huge body of evidence. Argues that it remains between Cyprus and Syria that are under the ocean are the exact description given by Plato. He said the size and configuration of the wallsand a channel on a hillside above a rectangular plain sitting on the seabed corresponds to Plato's description perfectly.Experts expects image data to be emerging from a trip last week by Mr. Samast.
